Sporting Kansas City is entering a new chapter after nearly two decades under the Illig family’s ownership, with a majority stake in the club being sold in a transaction valued at roughly $700 million, the highest price ever paid for a majority stake in Major League Soccer.
According to multiple reports, the Illig family which has owned the franchise since 2006, has agreed to sell 71 % of the club to one of its current limited partners. The buyer, identified by local outlets as Peter Mallouk, president and CEO of the wealth advisory firm Creative Planning and a minority owner of both Sporting KC and the Kansas City Royals, will now control close to 80 % of the team.
Despite the change in majority ownership, Sporting KC issued a statement affirming that management and daily club operations will remain under the Illig family’s direction, and their representation on the MLS board of governors will continue for now.
What the Deal Means
The reported enterprise value of roughly $700 million marks a significant benchmark for MLS, especially for a majority stake transaction, surpassing the club’s own estimated valuation of $650 million from Forbes last year. This reflects the continued surge in valuations across the league, where average team values have climbed alongside increasing investment and broader media exposure.
Mallouk initially became part of Sporting KC’s ownership group in 2022 and also holds a minority stake in Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals. His increased role strengthens his footprint in Kansas City sports.
Ownership Background and Legacy
The Illig family led by co‑founder Clifford Illig, bought the then‑Kansas City Wizards in 2006 and later rebranded the club as Sporting Kansas City ahead of the opening of what became Children’s Mercy Park. Under their leadership, the club won trophies including the MLS Cup and multiple U.S. Open Cup titles.
Despite recent on‑field struggles including missing the playoffs and major changes following longtime coach Peter Vermes’s departure, the franchise remains one of MLS’s most recognized clubs.
MLS Financial Landscape
The deal comes amid a broader wave of sales and investments in MLS clubs. Several teams have recently attracted high valuations or sold minority stakes, including clubs in Columbus, Austin and other markets.
Looking Ahead
As the league continues to grow, particularly with momentum building toward the 2026 World Cup being hosted in part at Children’s Mercy Park, Sporting Kansas City’s new ownership structure could bring fresh investment and ambitions both on and off the field.
