Wichita State University announced Tuesday that it is discontinuing its NCAA men’s and women’s golf programs, effective immediately.
The decision follows what the university described as a comprehensive evaluation of its athletics portfolio and resource allocation, as rising operational costs continue to impact Division I programs across the country.
“This decision was not made lightly and reflects deep and deliberate consideration,” Director of Athletics Kevin Saal said in a statement. “Our men’s and women’s golf teams have a proud tradition and have represented Wichita State with integrity and distinction.”
According to the university, the increasing costs associated with maintaining Division I programs have outpaced efforts to contain expenses, leading to difficult decisions aimed at preserving the long term financial stability of Shockers Athletics.
Wichita State said it is committed to supporting all student athletes affected by the change. Athletes who choose to remain at the university will continue to receive their financial assistance, while those looking to transfer will be provided guidance and resources to explore opportunities at other programs. The university also expressed gratitude to the players, coaches, alumni, and supporters who contributed to the history of Shocker golf.
Despite the change, Wichita State emphasized its continued commitment to maintaining a competitive, broad-based Division I athletics program aligned with its long-term priorities.
